Landscape Photo Competition 2013 No 5 : Judges Critiques : Page

I would say you are a future talent. Keep at it!

Another nice aurora borealis shot, though be it with an odd colour cast. It is difficult to get something original of such a photographed subject. There is nothing wrong with your photo Helmut (other than the colour) but this subject has been done so very well and so often before…

Nice atmosphere here, you have captured the scene beautifully, a weeping willow once again lending its very photogenic form. I’m not sure about the ducks, they are distracting, maybe you should remove them ?

OK, what are you photographing here? Yes, you are in a beautiful place and you have photographed what was there in front of you but you have paid no attention to composition or detail! What is that thing sticking in the bottom left corner? And that bit of island on the left? The boats are maybe interesting but you have cut them off…

Well here is the drama. This is an amazing shot and i love the gentle HDR style here. This really is « nature at its best ». Well done.

This is a fabulous shot but it doesn’t fit this theme. ‘Nature at its best”.

I am afraid you have overdone your “developing”, and forgotten to take the dust spots off.

Nice idea, you have taken this well, the composition, exposure and so on are all fine. It’s the message which is a bit strange… Perhaps a Touareg or a Wodaabe would have been better wandering off into the Sahara ☺

Amazing location and you have made a sound effort to photograph it in an original way. The surf makes a good leading line, your composition is very good, the black and white a good choice too, adding to the bleak atmosphere. I find your post processing somewhat severe, the vignette too heavy and the tonal adjustments to the rock and sky too obvious. I suspect you could get a nicer result from the original file.

This is certainly an interesting location for a landscape shot. Those bushes have great shapes and lots of interesting matter to photograph, the rocks make a lunar backdrop. I feel you haven’t composed your photograph. Maybe you should try using a tripod, you can really concentrate on composition with a tripod, they aren’t only for long exposures. I reckon you have too much sky and not enough of what is interesting on the ground. You have also darkened the sky, giving it an unnatural look and heavy presence taking us away from the vegetation. Go back if you can…
