Landscape Photo Competition 2013 No 5 : Judges Critiques : Page

This is nice, you have put your heart into this. Beautiful atmosphere and nicely balanced composition, focus is practically everywhere. You have created wonderful lines which draw the viewer into the unknown forest beyond. Great effort, keep at it you could take a winner.

Nice woods but the photo doesn’t say much, the composition is pretty cluttered and without much balance. I’m not sure what to look at and then my eye keeps getting pulled to your name where you say you do photography.

This is a lovely shot of a beautiful tree. There is just something missing to make it that little bit more magical. The subject is fantastic and definitely worth working on. The branches make great shapes, the willow has a wonderful yellow tint… I expect you could spend plenty time making some very graphic photographs here, get the wide angle out and the telephoto too! I hope to see more of this tree in the future.

HDR photography has no limits and results can certainly be interesting. I often find the heavy HDR processing very unappealing whereas a modest effect can be very beautiful and natural looking, the shadows and highlights keep their detail and the photograph takes on a certain amount of depth. This photograph however has a pretty severe HDR look, the scene has become unreal and so cannot win a “nature at its best†competition.

Beautiful view and lovely atmosphere, you obviously know how to compose a nice photograph, and this could have got through the first selection if the colours were less saturated creating an over-cooked and rather unnatural result.

If you want to discretely put your name on a competition photo that is fine but it shouldn’t distract from your beautifully weighted composition, and especially not hide an important line in the picture. You make yourself look careless. Apart from that I would say that this photo doesn’t represent the theme of this competition which is “Landscape†… “nature at its bestâ€
