  • Congratulations to the photographer of this winning image! The jury selected this image because of the creative way used to express the city theme by repurposing a historical method of sharing images, vision and ideals. (Do people even send post cards anymore?) A winning image must also be well composed and executed and this does not fail in either category, but a broader crop may have been uninspiring and much tighter would might not have worked either so this was just right!

  • Thank you for this unexpected award. I am Alexander Graham from Edinburgh Scotland and the shot was taken during a day trip to Paris last summer. Taken with my well worn second hand Canon 600D and quickly run through Lightroom and Silver Efex Pro. Thank you again.

  • It was a nice idea to present the idyllic old houses juxtaposed to the factories in background billowing smoke to convey different facets, however the fantastic handling of this image is a big part of what makes it a winner. The modeled light and rich color and contrast produce a visually arresting image as rich as the ideas behind it. Well done!

  • We appreciated this excellently timed image and its nice compositional use of the buildings and viewpoint that render in a very cinematic style.

  • Stripes, stripes and more stripes! Was this image staged? It seems almost too amazing to have happened by chance!

  • This photo is indeed a candid. While I am proud that the image received a mark of excellence, I am really confused by the judge's reaction: I do feel insulted by the fact that it was assumed to be staged (which more than likely weighed in their judging of the competition). I am trained as a photojournalist and I pride myself in practicing a pure form of street photography which boils down to only taking candids and never doing any post processing beyond some dodging and burning. Frankly, if one was to stage an image like this, they would place the subject much better in the frame and make them do something more interesting than crossing the street talking on the phone.

  • Both the low camera angle and placement in close proximity to the subject really help to engage the viewer and make them feel like they are inside of the image. Such a different viewpoint can often revitalize an old idea by bringing literally a new perspective.

  • This was captured through a 28mm f/2.8 Elmarit-M mounted on a Leica M8 about 6 years ago whilst sitting on my bike waiting at a set of traffic lights on Østerbrogade, Copenhagen. At that time I did a lot of street photography whilst cycling which enabled me to cover a lot of ground and get some interesting shots! Very little post processing other than b/w conversion via Silver Efex Pro.

  • This night scene stands out from many other wonderful night shots because the image would also work in day light too because the idea and composition encompasses more. The repeating pattern and shapes of the pillars in the water and in the buildings as well as the smooth water from the long exposure matching the sky help helps bring the image together. Nicely done!

  • Thank you very much for the Mark of Excellence. I am Tamara Tschopp from Zurich, Switzerland. I took this photo in August 2015 with my Canon 5D Mark II and the EF 16-35 mm f4. The view from Brooklyn Bridge park to the skyline of lower Manhattan is for me one of the best places in New York, very peaceful and impressive and I can only recommend everybody to go there in the evening...

  • Historical photos always have a certain appeal with their window into the past. This image nicely captures a great cultural vignette of city life pre iPhone.

  • This was taken on Sixth Avenue in New York City in 1975. The camera was a Canon Ftb SLR. The film was TriX. The lens was a 50mm Canon f/1.8 lens- which I know only because it was the only lens I owned at that time. Beyond that I don't have any record of the aperture or shutter speed. The negative was recently scanned and post-processed using Lightroom and Photoshop.

  • We'd love to see a large print of this panoramic view so we can look further into the space. Excellent!

  • Thank you for the Mark of Excellence. My name is Spyros. This is not a real panorama but a cropped image of Athens, including the Acropolis and the Lycabettus hill as seen from Philopappou hill. It was shot with a Canon EOS 6D in 2013 on a rare cloudy day. Post-processing was done using the beloved and now redundant Apple Aperture.

  • Beautiful on first glace, the framing of this city-scape with the streets and lines converging on the sun in the foreground elevates it to heroic portend and takes it to another level. Fantastic!

  • It was taken the last summer in Paris. I went to the Arc de Triomphe to take a good shot at the Eiffel tower at the sunset, then I turned around and saw the real shot. The sun going down behind the skyline in line with the street. It was truly a magical moment and made me understand why Paris is called the city of lights. Shot with a Canon 6D and 24-70mm. Post-processed in Lightroom.

  • Excellent study on current daily life has been recorded here in this image. Historians in the future may ask - why are they all female, what do they all do with their electronic devices, why does no one notice the photographer?
