Landscape Photo Competition 2014 No 1 : Judges Critiques : Page

Quite extraordinary. You have mastered the fall of light here in the most fairy tale way. It is maybe a shame that you haven't taken away that rather distracting hole of light through the trees on the top left.

This is stunning and almost made it. Your original frame is beautiful and you have brought so much sensitivity to that with your post processing. The contrast between the snow and the sky is fabulous despite its slightly unnatural feel. The cross, the birds and the distant rock give depth to the composition, the beautiful whites show off your competence. The sky is perhaps a little over cooked. Fabulous work though, I hope to see you back here with more.

Beautiful high key, crisp landscape. You have created a wonderful 3 way bounce within this image, the eye tirelessly jumping from tree to houses to the other tree over your bleak but beautiful landscape. A definite favourite from the start.

This is a fun look at a lavender crop in full flower. You have done something to the colour balance which has made the lavender too blue and the saturation of all colours is too high. It is tempting when infront of the computer to boost things too much but nature does know best and a natural look is always going to get further in a landscape photography competition. False colours will never compete with naturally lit real colours. The secret is to take your picture when natural light is flattering and special. I really like your composition though and the people enjoying the lavender field are nicely placed in the top right corner.

Nice subject but a little washed out. It looks as though your histogram is correct, by that i mean your whites haven’t been lost and so you could adjust the levels for a better exposure, especially if your original file is a RAW file, but the mid tones and blacks could have been darkened to give this picture better contrast. It is tricky exposing snowy scenes correctly, you have done pretty well but a little adjustment would have made this better.

Nice original shot, i like the contrasting angles of the branches and the water and the unusual composition. It is perhaps a little confusing to look at, particularly the right half but the play between the waterfall and the tree is effective. Well done.

This is an original approach though other than the fun figure there isn’t much that draws attention to the landscape.
