Sally at the beach. Orchard Beach, Bronx, New York. Canon 6D. Sally Mejia stands near the water at Orchard beach in the Bronx. Sally was born in New York and has never been to her family’s country of origin, Honduras. The Bronx beach is the only beach that she has ever known. For the past year and a half, I have been documenting the Garifuna community, an ethnic group of West African and Amerindian descent who live along the Caribbean coast of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua sharing a common history, language, and a system of customs and beliefs. In New York, there are approximately 100,000 people who identify as Garifuna, making this the largest concentration outside of Central America. Because of the city’s demographic diversity and pressures to assimilate to the local American culture, the community undergoes constant transformation yet maintains expressions of their ethnic and cultural identity.
