  • At first this image is simple and graphic with nice lines, composition and tones. It is easy and pleasant to look at, the shapes of its different parts all slotting together perfectly around the cut-out contour of the rooftops. But then there is a story of renewal and of a bright future as promised by the colored crane, the only real color in this photograph apart from the rainbow of course, rising up against a heavy sky, trying to peep over the buildings like a message from nature competing for attention. Great shot of several dimensions, you win this round!

  • Thank you very much! I am really happy and proud to have won this competition. My name is Guy Belzane, i am a french amateur photographer. This picture was taken in Paris one stormy night. With the crane standing out on the black sky, it could be a tribute to the great Belgian photographer Harry Gruyaert. Many thanks again!

  • Lovely cold blues make this an eye-catching reflection of Singapore. The long exposure adds some cloud glow to the chill, nice.

  • This is a cleverly divided composition with sharp and contrasting shapes separating the place of work from that of home. Neither escapes the pink tinted rinse from above, you have caught that so well. Very nice clean shot and a front runner here.

  • Thank you for choosing my photo for a mark of excellence. My name is Jeff Szucsik and I am an amateur photographer based in Canada. I was driving home from work and I had never taken a picture of Edmonton’s skyline from this vantage point. So I climbed up a snowy hill in a park to get the best results. It was very cold and windy so I couldn’t stay long. My fingers and ears were starting to freeze. But I managed to capture the rich golden hues from the setting sun. Thank you for this honour.

  • Beauty can be everywhere if you know how to frame it. It is the case here where you have taken a derelict block to make a striking image of complimentary squares and rectangles. A near collapsing ruin has a new found charm, its crumbling concrete takes on photographic texture. The rusty orange colour of the drainpipe holds the eye nicely too.

  • Here is a nice and fresh view of life in the streets of Havana with plenty character and nice colour, as seen through a dirty windscreen.

  • I wonder if this could have been taken from a passing train window, which in part is what is so nice about it, that impression of a sneaky view over something which is much more permanent, somebody else’s real life. We see the real city and its contrasts. The new sky scraping buildings burst upwards from amongst all of those hand washed clothes, each part dependent on the other. This would make a good travel photo too.

  • This was an early favourite, it says so much about a city. The boats and busy river, the city skyline leading away to its high rise center and the airplane flying over it all. City living indeed, and different viewpoint.

  • Clever composition and colour matching with that lonely figure make this very graphic image pop just nicely.

  • Here is a well executed, beautiful soft-coloured capture of a charming lakeside town (and reflection) in an atmospheric low light.
