  • Overall winner Congratulations to the image for what is a superbly balanced capture. I choose this image for the winning position based on the very high level of attention to detail and the skill that has gone into not only lighting it but also on the post edit side of the work. Its a subtile and classic stance with a modern feel to it. Well done, great lighting, great photography, great post work. Tim

  • Wow! Thanks so much for selecting my image as the winning image. The Aston is one of my bosses cars. It was photographed at his residence in Dallas Texas. I was assisted by Brandon LaJoie on the strobes. The car was shot with a Nikon D800 using a Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD Lens. The car was lit with a single Alien Bee AB800 with the strobe being moved around the car in 4 separate images. Those images were merged together in Photoshop during post. Thanks Again to Brandon for the help. Couldn't have pulled it off without your help!

  • Runner up third place! Well done Its a great image that really jumped out at me and whilst it may not be technically the strongest I have to award this the merit it deserves for being such an obvious difficult capture to achieve in the first place, amazing shot and a great piece of work. Tim

  • This idea was first drummed up in my head when I took my first jet flight as a U.S. Army Stars & Stripes news photographer in (peace time) Korea. Twenty-four years later at MClellan AFB (CA) I was working with test pilots and asked them if this vertical picture was possible - and would they do it. This was the third vertical try, the first the F-106 Delta Dart jet fighter plane was above the horizon line - all blue sky. The second below the horizon line - this was the third. I was in a T-38, the pilot let me fly it. Some years earlier I took a flight that I asked the pilot to roll upside down over Lake Tahoe in a T-37 - sitting side-by-side with him, it didn't win anything in this competition - but look for it. Enjoy the Leica M2 - 21mm Super Angulon lens images. Jim W. Vestal

  • Thank you for choosing my photo! This was taken by me (Russ Fortson) at the launch of STS96 in March 2008 at the Kennedy Space Center. It was taken with a Pentax K20D camera using the Pentax DA*50-135mm f/2.8 zoom. Exposure was 1/6s at f/4.0 and ISO 200. 50mm focal length. The camera was on a tripod with a wired remote.

  • I went out to photograph this Red Baron Pizza demonstration team east of Sacramento one morning. As we went into the sky for a news photo for my newspaper The Sacramento Union, the valley was fogged over. I took the color pictures, processed the Ektachrome only to find that there was no up, down, upside down, etc. So called them for a re-fly re-shoot at 2pm. This is the picture as we looped the loop in a giant circle, I thought it better to use the biplane look with the earth upside down (in the "sky"). Nikon 2000 with Vivitar 19mm lens. Jim Vestal

  • This is a truly skilled shot and it fully deserves it merit for use of lighting on what is a difficult colour and subject to shoot. I love the lighting on this and also the use of space that really adds to the overall feel. Great work Well done Tim

  • Wow! A powerful image that was quite difficult to capture I would image. Full of action and drama, I would have liked to have seen a little more space around the subject but overall great work and fully deserving high merit indeed. Great capture well done Tim

  • Thanks for the award. The photo was taken at NAS Pensacola ,Pensacola,FL last fall.I used a Nikon D90 with a Sigma 70-300mm zoom. The effect is water vapor that forms as the plane approaches the speed of sound, over 600 knots (600+ miles per hour) making such shots difficult indeed. The plane is only in range for a few seconds.Part skill, part luck.F5.6 at 640 shutter speed, set to continuous and fire away and hope you get the shot. The plane banked at just the right moment.Seen from the ground it looks like lightning flashing around the plane- dramatic and hypnotic. It is the best overall "vapor trail" photo I have so far. I used graduated tint to darken the top of the frame. I have a lot more airshow, landscape, modeling and rock concert photos at the link below. Brett Risen

  • Loved this image when I first saw it, i love the balance, the space allowed to the subject although a little more top and bottom would have been nicer I think. The lighting is great and the way that it impacts on the textures and the floor. Well done, great photography Tim

  • Thank you, Tim! Congratulations to all! My name is Aaron Wilson, I live in Austin, TX and am very honored to receive a mark of excellence. I was at a small club on the East side shooting for my friend's band. In between sets, I stepped outside for some air and found this amazing 50's era pedal car hanging on the wall above the doorway. I loved the lighting and textures and wanted to create the illusion that the car was on the floor being photographed from above. I agree the framing is tight on top an bottom, but felt it was necessary to maintain the illusion. For me, the crop also adds an uneasiness of the atomic age to the image and juxtaposed with the child's toy to great effect. I imagined my father as a boy, abandoning his favorite toy to follow his mother down into the bomb shelter. Shot with an Olympus EM-5, m.zuiko [email protected] 1/90 ISO3200. Lightroom4 BW conversion with minor exposure/contrast/clarity adjustments.

  • Great image and well deserving of merit. You get a real sense of speed and space with this image. Good use of a wider focal length lens and great use of time and space also. Good exposure work between the outside and inside elements and the little sun flares just add to the feel. Great work Tim

  • My name is Rob Overcash, an American currently living near London. This is a "self portrait at 45mph." The camera -- 5D Mk2 with 17-40 f/4L -- is tripod mounted in the rear seat and remote triggered via MacBook in the passenger seat. Being tethered to a laptop also allowed me to monitor LiveView while driving, helpful given nearly 150 shots over two days. Single image file with no photoshop filters or trickery.

  • Love this shot, not an obvious vertical image at first sight I would have thought but it works well and brings your attention to the cars front details and with that balanced against the fading sun and the textures that gives us on the ground mixed with some clever lighting on the car it really works. Great work well done Tim
