I am honored to have my photo ranked among the best photos. Thank you very much. I'm Kis Szilveszter, amateur nature photographer from Romania. "Robber fly portrait" The robber fly seen in the photograph was sitting on a Carthusian Pink flower in the early morning hours. At this time many other insects wait in the safety of plants for the proper setting before starting off. Taking advantage of the peaceful moment, l established the desired depth of field with the help of focus-stacking, highlighting thereby the robber fly’s characteristic ambush behavior. It usually lands on an object or plant from where it can see the airspace of the area. At such times it observes the potential prey, which it catches in flight. I took the photo with a reverse lens. I fabricated a home-made flash diffuser for the internal flash, and used the tooth of a comb to manually control the aperture.
