Wildlife Photo Competition 6 2013 : Judges Critiques : Page

Fantastic shot which you have totally mastered. I am not going to start going on about the beautiful exposure, composition or processing because you obviously know exactly what you are doing. Very well done.

This is a nice capture of a slightly startled looking prairie dog. Unfortunately the quality of your photo is not good enough to make it through. Your focus is good but you don’t have enough pixels, even at this low definition screen size…

I think this is a puma… in any case it is a great playful shot and we can only be impressed by those feline claws. I like the colour tones you have created, bringing this photo something extra.

Once again our foxy friend makes a remarkable capture, i love how the fox is coming straight at you. You have managed the focus almost perfectly, it is slightly behind fox’s eyes. It looks like he is carrying a chick and a piece of meat which suggests he hasn’t caught a prey but has been fed? which is partly why this stunning photo is not higher up the rankings.

Sorry Colleen but this is a bird. Nice photo though, maybe you should try the bird competition.

Great action and atmosphere of this wolf pack. I love the dark wolfy tones and of course the interaction between the various individuals, the ibex horn adding to the drama. Well done.

Here is a lovely moody shot of a highland cow in the heather. Despite this beautiful animal’s wild looks it is a domestic animal and so cannot qualify in this competition.

Your exposure is good, focus is good too, the detail on the animal and the pine is nicely accentuated thanks to the sharp focus and short depth of field. Your subject is nice too, i think a young ibex, but there is something annoying about your composition. Getting in close can make a nice portrait but here your composition is too close and the shady side of its face has become too important and unbalances the whole. It looks as though the blacks in there are not lost so you could perhaps have lightened those a little in your digital darkroom.

I like the cool tones in this photo though i find the framing a little tight. It is a shame to have cropped off the fur on his ear…You have managed to capture a nice expression but there is little else to make this interesting.

Another bird in a « no birds please » competition…
