Judges Comment We find this image interesting for the atmosphere and the technical qualities. There are several layers of history going on with the man in the front as the obvious focus. Photographers Comment Thank you thank you thank you! It is an honor to be selected among this excellent competition, I really very much appreciate the mark! (I would have accepted the $$ and the MM as well... LOL). Congrats to the winner(s)! I am Markus from Zurich, Switzerland, and this picture was taken at the Forbidden City in Beijing, China about a year ago with my Leica M9 and the 50mm Summilux ASPH, for those who are interested. |
Judges Comment The almost incomprehensible activity in this image makes it almost unreal, and that the photographer managed to get the details and the explosive and dramatic activity communicated in a compact frame is quite notable. |
Judges Comment The composition and strength of this image is notable. It's an instant strong image with enough story or mystery to keep you captured. Photographers Comment Dear Jury
I am very honored and grateful that you chose out of these hundreds of very beautiful and stunning pictures my picture. Also congratulation to the winner, you really deserve the price.
The picture was shot with the NIKON D800 & Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED during a Greg Gorman portrait & nude workshop in an old Villa close to Rome. The conversion to B&W was done with a PS workflow Greg provided to us as well as my own adjustments. Photography is not my profession (even if I would love to do so) but my passion. My name is Peter Mueller and I live close to Frankfurt Germany but travel a lot across the world. I do people and landscape photography. Starting with a Voigtländer Vito B in 1975, still developing B&W in my darkroom, I work today with 2 Nikons and the Leica M9-P and M for Street- and People Photography.
Thanks again and I will follow this contest as often as possible |
Judges Comment This image instantly throws you out of the normal viewpoint and you start trying to understand how the relation is between the people sitting and the people standing. Technically the image is well made, the composition is compact and the cropping perfect with straight lines. A well told story or mystery. Photographers Comment Thank you! So many people have joined this competition and I saw so many photos I really liked. I am really proud to be among photos with the mark of excellence!
Photo made by Kujaja Jaja in Hamburg with a Canon 5D Mark II and yes post processed ;-)
This photo I also used as an icon for our streetphotography photobook project (which you can also join). |
Judges Comment This is an outstanding piece of history frozen in the moment. We can't help thinking how they will look at this in 100 years. We like the frontal attitude of the main subject. Photographers Comment Thanks so much for selecting my photo “CDK & Friend” for a Mark of Excellence in the B&W Contest. I feel very humbled to be included with such extraordinary work. I’m Dick Pitini and live in Powhatan VA, USA. This shot was taken in Charlottesville, VA in a Five Guys Burger & Fries with an Olympus E5 at 24mm. Shot RAW & post done in Silver Efex Pro 2. I was attending a Mary Ellen Mark photography workshop and had gotten to know CDK who is a “street person” over the course of the week. On my last day of shooting in the area, they came in to fill their water bottles and he ask her to join him so I could take their photo. Since I had never met her she was not real sure about the entire process. |
Judges Comment We find this a very clean and well-composed image of how the world looks today when you travel and experience new places. The moment is captured, sometimes for our own memory but also often for everyone else to know. Photographers Comment This photo was taken in Shanghai China when I was working on my personal project- Red Fragments. It was a moody day when I was there. Currently, I am still working on this project, and this project will be finished in December 2013. |
Judges Comment This a gritty and interesting picture, almost abstract, with an atmosphere that is both familiar and foreign at the same time. The technical execution supports the atmosphere really well. Photographers Comment Growing out of a fascination with big cities and the people who inhabit them, this photo is part of a ongoing project set in Tokyo. For more, see stevenfordphoto.tumblr.com |
Judges Comment An almost filmic moment captured with straight lines and a compact crop that isolates the story and makes it felt. We really like how this image works. Photographers Comment This was taken at the elephant fair in England using a leica m6,35mm summilux pre-asph and tri-x at about 1000asa.Its a pig to print, this image is a digital photograph of that print.
Just to say its great to be one of the finalists and thanks for the free entry to try again.

Judges Comment A frozen moment, a piece of history of our time, lots of questions unanswered. A really well-executed image with a lot in it, but not too much. Exactly what is needed to make the story interesting. Photographers Comment Thank you for the "Mark Of Excellence".

Judges Comment A moment of thought captured in what seems a long life and a room where a lot of interesting things have been worked on. The window is a view to the world, it is not an isolated place but a viewpoint to life and the world. |
Judges Comment There is something similar to teenagers sharing a mobile phone screen in this photo. It is very cute. The composition, the balance of things and the tones are a pleasure to see. Well done. Photographers Comment Many thanks for the honor and kind comments! There were so many wonderful photographs submitted. This picture, which I call "The News From Tripoli", was taken in Udine, north-eastern Italy, inside the beautiful art deco style "Cafe 900". The NATO action over Libya had just started, and the front page headline of the newspaper these ladies are poring over reflects that. --Kai Griffin (Budoia, Italy)
[Used: Olympus E-P3, Voigtländer 25mm, f/0.95, B&W conversion in Nik Silver] |
Judges Comment We like the perspective of this image that helps making it interesting, different and tell the story of the expressions. An image that will communicate differently to different people whenever they look at it again. Photographers Comment Thanks to I SHOT IT team and the judges for this mark. I also want to congratulate the winner and many interesting entries. My name is Pedro Ferreira, I live in Lisbon, Portugal and I'm a fashion and portrait photographer. I don't usually do street photography, but often take my M9 (that I use for 90% of my professional work) to make some notes for ambiances and locations. There are times and situations that are irresistible. Like this one. The nun and the teenager contrast in the Paris Subway train, the nun expression and her style and posture, the fake style Prada handbag, and the book cover the girl was reading (The Just Assassins_Albert Camus) with the face looking at me, were shouting to take the photograph. I want finally to thank Steve Huff for letting many of us know about this competition. Leica M9_35mm Summilux ASPH. |
Judges Comment The composition of this image helps making the expression of the dog and its owner similar. A cute, well executed capture of a moment. |
Judges Comment This is a rather outstanding image with some filmic qualities. The face of the subject in front is almost enough to make this image interesting in any context. If you then add elephants and girls it just become even more of a mystery what the story is. We like this a lot. |
Judges Comment Well composed, straight on, great atmosphere. We like this. Photographers Comment Daniele Meli, Rome, Fujifilm X-Pro1 with Fujinon 35mm f1.4 |
Judges Comment We like images of hope and this signals a lot of that. The composition and atmosphere is unique and understated so you as the viewer has to work to get into the image. The tones are really pleasing, so is the grain that somehow is stronger and more dreamy outside then inside. Very well done! Photographers Comment Congratulations to the winner and to all the photographers for the hig quality images.
Thanks to the I shot it juror for the comments and the possibility to try again.
The photo was shot in Cuba during The Special Period (1994). Leica M6: Elmarit - 28 mm. Film: Kodak Tmax-3200. HC 110. |
Judges Comment Shadows are an important element of photography, and even without the airplane this image is something special. The airplane and the photographers shadow make you want to turn the image around and be part of it to understand more. |
Judges Comment The girl stands as if she was a soldier amongst other soldiers. But she is not. Out of number, out of usual context. This image is strong and well executed with a story behind it to support what is a strong portrait of the girl alone also. Well done. |
Judges Comment This is a beautiful image on many levels. We wonder if it is a model shoot. It is simple and strong in composition and use of tones. Everything is there. We like it a lot. Photographers Comment My thanks to the judges for the mark of excellence and congratulations to the winning photographer who's image was thoroughly deserving of the prize-so beautiful, strong and multilayered. The Leica Monochrome couldn't be put into better hands!
The judges guessed correctly that the image was actually of Victoria Secret model Rosie Huntington Whiteley who I shot for Italian Glamour magazine in Puerto Rico with a local teenager I found while scouting locations and press-ganged into acting out an intimate love affair with Rosie for my camera (lucky guy)!
I was still shooting film at the time-Ilford HP5 rated at 200ASA on my Mamiya 645 Pro Tl with 120mm Macro lens. (73mm full frame equivalent)

Judges Comment It is almost a miracle the photographer managed to capture all these people, expressions and stories in one single image. It is very impressive, and so is the light and the tonality. We like this a lot. Photographers Comment I was in PingYao, Shanxi Province, China in 2011..a UNESCO Heritage City and just about every turn of a corner offers up many photo-ops. The man with the rickshaw was merely posing for his camera with the customers. He had just chastised someone for snapping a photo since this is how he makes a living...but he didn't say a word to me. His camera was set low to the ground and only with an automatic timer. I took the photo with a Canon Rebel ESi set to auto/no flash. Thank you for accepting my photo to this extent. I am honoured. I live in Vancouver Canada and travel regularly. |
Judges Comment Interesting perspective let the viewer almost be the subject in this photo, able to feel the water and hear the sounds. Very interesting and well done capture. |
Judges Comment Two shadows and one person. A simple story well told in an almost fairy tale manner. We like it. |
Judges Comment If he is the owner or the competitor is unknown, but all elements are in this frame to tell the story of competition. We all want to know what the judges think, and we all want to win. Photographers Comment Poultry Showmanship competition at the 2013 National Western Stockshow in Denver, Colorado. Leica Monochrom with 35mm Summicron ASPH.

Judges Comment Strong and simple composition with a lot of space and a simple story. It makes you think about their life and your own. The tones and light enables you to almost feel the atmosphere and temperature. Well done. Photographers Comment Thanks for choosing my photo among such outstanding work.
The scene was captured during a photography workshop in North India. I found this location the day before and got up early to get those twenty minutes of hazy early morning light. Along with the deep rumbling and vibration caused by the trains being there was a memorable experiance.
Cheers

Judges Comment This image reminds us of a Finnish movie. You don't know if you should laugh or cry. A new beginning and an end meet in the same image. No matter the conditions it is an unusual image, and we like it. Photographers Comment This was shot at my brothers wedding, the ceremony was held in the hospital chapel. The father of the Bride was put in the bed that morning after his condition had deteriorated rapidly over the previous few days, he died about 3 weeks later. My brother and his wife had just returned from a holiday in Fiji where they had hoped to get married the following year.
Shot on a 5Dmk3 with 24-70mm f2.8Lmk2, lit from the far right with a bounced Ranger Quadra flash. |
