I made this photograph in 1971 from the window of a friend's apartment near the Place de République in Paris. I was using only a Super Cambo 4x5 view camera at the time, working on a project to capture scenes of the Marais, old Jewish quarter, before a lot of it was demolished to make way for the Centre Pompidou and other questionable "improvements" to the neighborhood. I remember that I removed the rear element of the lens to increase the focal length and create the soft focus around the edges of the image. -- Bill Bullard
