  • Congratulations to the photographer for this brilliant winning image which captures the varied and juxtaposed emotions of city life. The viewer’s attention immediately drawn to bus is quickly redirected via it’s vanishing lines to the only fully visible face in the whole image. His downtrodden look is juxtaposed by the uplifted faces in the billboard directly above and behind though this may not be noticed on first glance. The viewers eye is pulled around through the image by the compositional elements to the fantastical faces in the movie poster top right before being drawn back to the real-life face of the bus driver which perhaps wasn’t seen at first. The composition continues to circle the viewers eye again and brings out more and more elements each time, deepening the connections. Excellent image, well captured!

  • Thank you so much for the kind words and thank you for choosing my photo to be the first place winner of the 1 2017 City competition! There were so many amazing photos that were submitted by other great photographers as well. I am truly honored. I took this photo in Manhattan with my Fujifilm X-T1 camera along with the Fujifilm XF 18MM Lens. I have been doing photography for over 15 years and I am currently working hard on becoming a filmmaker. I could never afford to go to a film school but I believe that my knowledge of photography will help me better understand the art of filmmaking better. I really hope to one day show the world what I can do. Thank you once again!

  • It’s hard to know if this complex image was a single shot, a double exposure or a composition of overlaid images, however it works very well. It’s an enjoyable exercise to try and find all there is to see and discover how they relate. The composition works well since the primary lines intersect with the person in shadow. The light and dark regions placed on those two vectors create entry and exit points for the viewer’s eye and the other angular lines help circulate the eye throughout.

  • Thanks for this award! Location is the Opera house in Oslo, Norway. It's is a single shot. Because of it's asymmetric transparant build you see the interior, reflections and view through the building.

  • Fantastic use of the aerial perspective in this image with the shadows of the buildings helping to weight the bottom and give it a sense of depth.

  • The symmetry, contrasting colors, and gleaming metal all give life to this image. An interesting vibrating effect is created with the use of both stable and inverted shapes in the composition that oppose each other. The symmetry is almost perfect except for the dark corner upper right. Excellent!

  • The patterns of the building encompassing the life inside are visually appealing. Some intrigue has been created by catching the only two people facing each other in one balcony near the center. Was the crop to leave only part of a balcony on the right side deliberate?

  • The alignment of the different horizontal elements has created an effect of flattened space which is particularly visible on the left side of this image. The flattening of space in turn causes an oddity of scale and proportion between the different people that is somewhat unsettling – and that feeling matches with the primary character of the image, an unbalanced roller bladder.

  • This dreamlike image speaks about voyages and time travel to me. The spots and blur could detract from some images but here they add to the effect. Wonderful!
