  • Perfect timing, sharp photography, and a lovely wintery backdrop for this sweet red squirrel to show off its coat and jump straight into 1st place. Beautiful shot, well done, you win this round!

  • Thank you very much for selecting my image! My name is Julian Rad, I'm located in Austria and this photo was taken in a mixed forest area on a very cold & snowy winter morning in december. While sitting in my hide I was able to freeze this jumping squirrel with a shutter-speed of 1/8000s using a Canon 60D with a Sigma 300mm f/2.8 prime lens. ISO: 3200, f/2.8, Manual Focus. Many thanks again !

  • These japanese macaques have become famous for their winter bathing habits and we all have seen many striking snowy photos of them wallowing in the water, but this portrait is different. The hammam like misty atmosphere sets a wonderful scene for a portrait and what a pose he gave you too! Lovely soft tones frame that hard look, the red face and yellow eyes so intense. Beautiful shot, well done.

  • Another beautiful red squirrel, this time with a clever reflection. You chose your spot well, i guess you have a hide installed… You have captured the delicacy of this cute little animal who hardly ripples the surface of the water, the atmosphere is lovely and natural. Love this one.

  • This is amazing. You have caught all the force of this notorious beast in chilly blue. That look in its eye! How ever did you manage this very unusual picture? I love its tail lurking behind…

  • Your picture is as strong as your subject here. The grainy darkness enhances the lion’s muscular physique and very handsome face, the water spraying out from his main making hundreds of contrasting droplets. This is nice simple photography which shows plenty talent.

  • Shot with a Canon PowerShot G7X. This is is an image from a series of (semi)Wild orangutans in Gunung Leuser National Park, North Sumatra from February 2016. They live, eat, and breed in the jungle, but the orangutans who live near this access to the park are habituated to people. We saw at least 10 orangutans perched in trees, mostly uninterested in the occasional groups passing. This is Jackie, reintroduced to the jungle from captivity, with two babes that have been born in the wild. She isn't afraid of people, and has learned that if she comes to see and interact with the humans the trekking guides give her food. As a traveler this is a conflicting moment of excitement to see wild orangutans up close, learning about animal rehabilitation, and sadness that our visit has now reinforced this behavior.

  • There is something disturbing in this hyena’s demeanor, these animals have a very particular (is it creepy?) air about them and there is plenty of that here. I love the scenery and the watery setting is unusual, the reeds and lilies adding to the wild feel. Nice shot, well done.

  • Jumping on water. We don’t see many kangaroos in this competition so this enchanting shot of Roo jumping off into the sunset immediately caught my eye. Lovely.
