  • First I'd like to thank everyone who cast a vote for this photo. There were a lot of really good shots to look at and choose from. Also, congratulations to all those who received the Mark of Excellence. I know I cast my votes for a few of them. My name is Robert Beyer, I'm from Putnam County, New York. This photo was taken last June, in the Mesquite Sand Dunes, in Death Valley, California. It was just after sunrise, as I was hoping to capture the long shadows meandering through the dunes. I use a Pentax K5 with a SMC PENTAX DA* 50-135MM F2.8 ED (IF) SDM lens. (1/640s f4 ISO 200 focal length 50mm) No post processing, just tweeks in the contrast and some sharpening as available in Picasa. I read somewhere a Nat. Geo. photographer said that if we are happy with 2% of our shots, we did good. This is one of my 2%. Thanks again. Hasta el próximo vez...inshallah.

  • Hi, my name is João Domingues and I live in Sintra, a small village near Lisbon, Portugal. I want to thank you all for your votes and 'Mark of Excelence'! :) This was shot with a Nikon D80 + Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4 @18mm f/13, at Praia do Magoito, Sintra, Portugal. These colours are natural since there was a forest fire a few kilometers away, I had only to do some unsharp and levels.

  • My name is Paul J Marto and I shot this funny picture in February, 2010. I used my Canon 7D with a 100-400mm zoom lens. I did some slight post production tweaking of the colors. I call this whimsical photograph "Thought There Was A Prize In Here" and it was taken in Southern California. A squirrel frantically empties a box of Nerds candy in search of the prize that was never found. This was hysterical to watch. The squirrel never ate any of the candy, he was just determined to get to the bottom of the box, throwing Nerds all over the place in the process. This photo and many others are available for purchase on my etsy site: https://www.etsy.com/shop/Martography. Also, please visit my Fine Art America website listed below to view 200 of my best wildlife prints.

  • Hi my name is Alex. I'm from Seattle, Washington. I took this photo on the University of Washington campus one day while looking up between three large brick towers in Red Square. I happened to get an airplane that was passing over at the same time. The negative space reminded me of wings and thought it complimented the airplane in a strange way. I shot with a Canon 6D and 24-70mm Tamron lens. Thanks for voting!

    • The photo was taken in Münster, Germany. I needed about thirty atemps, as the camera is not the fastest one. But as there were so many bicycles I had plenty of chances to catch the right one. It was great fun to shoot with my Leica D-LUX 5, no post processing. Thank you for the award!
