  • Many thanks! This photo was taken with a CanonEOS Mark iv with a 180mm Canon Macro. The focal plane was very flat which allowed me to use a fairly open aperture and still hold the butterflies in focus but let the background become very soft. The backlight was wonderful, and I used a fill in flash set a minus 1. This photo was taken at Rancho Naturalista in Costa Rica last year.

  • This Carpenter Bee was shot with a borrowed Sony Alpha 100, with a 1.5m/4.9ft Sony Macro lens (4.5-5.6/75-300) and a Raynox DCR-150. My Nikon flashes don't work with the camera, but it was an overcast day. With ISO 200 and a 1 second exposure, I was able to manually trigger the flashes (2, triggered with Cactus Wireless V5 transceivers). I'm Derek Hauffe, currently shooting in Alabama, US. Thanks for the recognition :)

  • . I shot this photo in Seattle. I shot this image with a Nikon D800 and a Tokina 100mm f2.8 Macro. I shot it a 1/100 and f16 with 3200 ISO. I was very close to the cat's face. I used Lightroom to process the shot.

  • I took this picture in a moor near my hometown Karlsruhe/Germany. I used a EOS 50D with a Tamron 90mm 2.8 macro lens. The light setup was established with a reflector on the right side and a ring-flash unit on the lens. The flash fired only on the left side of the ring. I also added a small led-light behind the woods on the left side. Processing - curves in Lightroom cropping and sharpening in Photoshop
