  • A really outstanding photo! The light composition and her face, as a part of the blurry background, transfers this picture into a real dramatic scene. You put the focus on the hands of this child and not on her face. Unusual but effective! My first impression was a recollection of religious scene. It really conveys feelings for me! Congratulations to the winner!!

  • Thank you so much! As a persistent travel photographer with focus on Asian culture- and biodiversity, I am seldom at home. The scene - shot on the fringe of an almost arid plateau near Savanketh, Laos - shows one many girls who carried heavy water buckets on a coffee plantation. In the middle of the dry season, every break is welcome.. (135mm @ f2.8 FF, moderate post) I thank the jury from the bottom of my heart and would like to express my kind respect to everyone who has been honored here. All the best from Germany, Wolf

  • A beautiful photo of a young Indian girl that tells a whole story to me. The way her mother holds her face directly into the camera and the facial expression of her is stunning. It tells a lot about indian culture. Sad and lovely at the same time!

  • A picture that tells a story to me! The couple, maybe the grandparents of this baby, look to each other in a affectionate way and reminisce about their past. The baby does not care at all but it rests joyfully in grannies arms. A picture full of tenderness and emotions!

  • Thank you very much for the comment. You are describing exactly what the grandparents have felt at that moment. I´ve captured it with a Nikon D700, which I typically use with a Leica R-Summilux, but this time with a Nikkor lens for a softer look. George, Germany

  • A group of kids looking curious and also skeptical at the photographer. The composition is great, everything fits perfectly together. Even the three birds in the background. Great shot!

  • David Scarbrough, Houston, TX. This is our neighbor's beautiful daughter who agreed to have her photo taken. She had just woke up from a nap so her hair was still mussy and her eyes dilated. This was a few years ago and she's still as lovely as ever. The lighting is natural light coming through an entry way window. The background is a large print of a flower painting by Van Dael, it made for a nice blurred background. I used a Canon 5D and a Canon 100mm macro lens. ISO 500, F3.2, 1/80 Very little post processing as the shallow DOF let the focus fall off nicely to emphasize the eyes.

  • This photo strikes with a strong composition. The geometric forms and the play between light and shadow goes hand in hand and works well together. Great work!

  • Sometimes you need to change your point of view to get a great photo. This is a great example for a way of trying out another perspective. I like the composition and the way the colors work together. On the one hand the little girl is curious on the other she searches the safeness of her father. Well seen and caught in the right time!

  • (Leica M9 & Leica 50mm Noctilux f/1.0) It was a short stroll down "Hollywood Pictures Backlot" at Disneyland's California Adventure Park that I saw this adorable young gentleman and his fluffy friend. As he stepped into the center of the trolley rails, I knew it would be a great element in guiding the viewer's eye into the subject. Furthermore, the street lamps and studio lighting that hung high above also enclosed the image and gave it more of a cozy and warm feeling to me. It was during twilight hour when I took this photograph, the reflection of light sparkled on the brick flooring, making the tracks glow, and also lite up the boys face and just enough on the crest of his hair atop. If you look closer, you can also see that the boy was wearing a "Happy Birthday" button/lapel pin, which really completed the story of explaining why he was so exhilarated being at the "Happiest Place On Earth"! Thank you for this Mark of Excellence! ~Tuananh Nguyen
