  • This is beautiful and absorbing. The concentration in the eyes of the chap cooking make this photo. The care and attention he is giving the preparations contrast nicely with the carefree attitude of the other distant man eating and the relaxed party atmosphere elsewhere. This photo is about the food and its important social role. Great depth and nice monochrome. Congratulations.

  • Another b+w shot and a fun "out of the box" subject which you have approached with an original angle. So refreshingly simple, well done.

  • This looks like a scene from a covered Asian market. Beautiful arrangement of different coloured eggs and a lovely natural light. Well spotted and composed, you have kept this nicely simple.

  • Taken in a street market in Guilin,China in April 2014 using my wonderful Leica X1.I have been taking photos for over 50 years .Nowadays I like to keep my camera gear very simple and as light as possible .This shot was a jpeg taken on the "natural" setting and is straight from the camera with no post processing and no cropping.I find that the X1 produces superb images on this setting and it is now my default setting . I use an OVF on the X1 -I cannot adapt to using the LCD as a viewfinder-and I love the simple controls, the feel of the camera and above all else the image quality. The fact that it has just a fixed lens means that I don't find myself wondering which lens to use so I concentrate on framing the shot not changing or zooming the lens. Thank you for choosing my simple photo .I feel honoured to be commended in such a strong field of entries.John Shingleton

  • Nice original on the plate shot. You have taken your subject a little further, creating shapes with the knife and plate, the shapes and textures of the food nicely enhanced by the horizontal lighting. Nice shot.

  • It is the simplicity of your composition and the soft light which makes these sprouts so appetising. I love the real tones and colours. This was an instant favourite.

  • Hi my name is Amy Nichols. This was an accidental shot taken one evening while I was trimming and preparing brussel sprouts for dinner. I fell in love with the beautiful green and texture of the leaves. I took this shot with a Nikon D3100 and processed it in PS. Thank you so much for the Mark of Excellence.

  • Great shot of food as the centre of attraction. We all love a dig into this kind of French picnic. The moving hands and bare feet bring a nice homely friend's atmosphere. Well done.

  • The burnt out background works well here, helping this walnut show off its veins and butterfly shape. Nice vertical angle and macro lens give it a larger than life presence. Tasty!

  • Thank you very much for awarding my photo the mark of excellence. My name is Rob Gubiani and I live in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. I saw the veins in the walnut being symbolic for veins in the lungs. The link between healthy bodies and healthy food is inextricably linked and I hoped to demonstrate this with this photo. This photo was shot with a canon 100mm macro with the walnut being pinned onto a white candle, in natural light. It was a basic setup but it worked a charm. Some lightening was undertaken in photoshop. I wish to congratulate all the other award winners for their wonderful photos.
