The dark clouds run across the sky in the same direction as the planes and creates a palpable feeling of foreboding and doom, yet the movement of the viewers eye (and the planes) is halted by the pole. The pole helps make this image work as it return the viewers eye to the bottom of the image, and full circle through the 12, the buildings and then left back across before starting again. Nicely done!
