  • The factors that make a bird image stand out can relate to the avian subjects themselves or to the photographic techniques used (or a combination of the two). In this case, although the vulture is obviously an impressive individual, it's clearly the art of the photographer that has elevated this flight shot into such a striking image. The use of a monochrome presentation is the most obvious choice made and this was a good decision well executed, with a great range of tones modelling the subject. Compositionally, the vertical boundary splitting the frame into half bird, half background is very powerful, with the protruding head adding perfect punctuation and the lightened eye providing a strong focal point. An arresting and appealing image.
