  • This photo of an Avocet feeding in torrential rain conveys the fact than life has to go on, whatever the weather. Unfortunately, most bird photographers are much less hardy than their subjects and head home as soon as the weather becomes in any way inclement. The harsh realities of avian life therefore tend to be relatively under-recorded. In this case, the photographer has demonstrated the value of braving the elements by capturing a highly engaging image that stands out from the crowd.

  • A good example of how keeping your subject (a male Capercaillie in this case) small in the frame can provide a sense of where the bird lives, as well as what it looks like

  • Strong backlighting creates a dramatic effect as it illuminates this egret's feeding splashes

  • Reflection shots of land birds are relatively uncommon. The vertical, head-down pose of this Nuthatch makes for a dynamic composition.

  • Cropping off a bird's head is rarely a good idea in bird photography, but this brave composition works well
