  • Owl images, more than those of most other bird families, have a tendency to be artificial in some way, whether due to the use of flash lighting, man-made settings or even advanced creative editing/montaging techniques. It's refreshing, therefore, to see an owl image with purely natural elements, including an authentic habitat setting. That said, this image would not have won this competition had it been taken a second earlier or a second later, illustrating the critical part played by precise timing when shooting birds in motion. As it is, the swept-back wings and splayed talons of this alighting Barn Owl generate a truly dynamic feel, augmented by the look of intense concentration as the bird focuses on its intended landing point. Well-lit plumage and careful cropping round off a satisfying image.

  • My name is Judi Dressler -- hello, and thank you so very much; I am honored. This photo was taken in Colorado, and I felt so very lucky to get the shot of this beautiful owl just about to grab that branch! There is almost no post-processing -- just a little enhancement to bring out the colors. Equipment was a Nikon D4S, with a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 fixed lens and 1.4x teleconverter.

  • Interesting how the addition of flying ladybirds transforms and elevates this perched finch portrait

  • A well-captured flight shot of an extremely challenging subject, with the added element of a floating feather (you can easily imagine the Swallow thinking 'Wait a minute, that's not food!')
