  • The beautiful layers and movement in the water contrast so nicely with the solitary larch tree and give an impression of abundance and power. The lines and textures of the falling water make a graphic image, the foreground brings depth. This is a lovely telephoto shot, isolating the subject from its surrounds and leaving us guessing at the scale of this natural wonder. You have kept the light natural and soft, the beauty here is real. This photo jumped straight to the top, congratulations you win this round !

  • This was probably my favorite photo in 2017. After an hour of walking a little above 1500m altitude in the French Alps, here I am in front of this waterfall called "cascade de la pleureuse" (in English "squeal waterfalls"). I was amazed by this show of Mother Nature. I stayed not far from 4 hours in front of her and I found this single tree particularly photogenic. I searched with all types of focal length to put it in values. It was finally with my telephoto lens that I got what I was looking for. I called this picture "staircase of water". picture made with FUJI XT-2 and 50-140mm f/2.8 with polarized filters.

  • This is just lovely and transports us into the morning light. I love the pastel colours and the strength of this most simple composition. It was a close call, great shot, well done.

  • Here is a beautiful and carefully composed minimal view where both detail and lack of detail create a very peaceful and most original image. Well done.

  • This is a lovely monochrome, the dark rock contrasting so well with the snow, the clouds isolating the mountain top, great shot and what a place to be!

  • First of all I want to say thank you so much for that honor! My name is Juliane Thamm and I live in the very south of Germany which is perfect to live my mountain love. The shot was taken during an early winter tour and there were very very cold and icy conditions. Just beneath the top of our summit the clouds opend up and we had this great view to mountain "Hochstaufen". It has just 1.771 hm but it looks as if it is one of the biggest ones. I used a Nikon D7000 with a lens 16-80mm f2.8. The post processing was just the converting into black and with and a little adjustment of contrasts.

  • This is such a dreamy composition with so much space. We have a strong feel of the crispy cold of this wintery place but also an invitation for sitting in contemplation under this ageless tree.

  • The graphic frame and an unusual viewpoint bring interest to this drone shot where the black asphalt contrasts so well with the snowy forest.

  • Your striking diagonal horizon and the opposing solitary tree make a strong match to the hard contrast of this photograph. Nice work, well done.

  • Thank you very much for the mark of excellence! It is really a great honor! My name is Irina Sigl and photography is one of my greatest passions! The picture was taken on a beautiful summer evening in Carinthia, Austria with a Nikon D300. I liked this little tree, as it bravely asserts itself against the wind.

  • I'm very pleased to be a finalist with two pictures at this competition! Thank you very much for the Mark of Excellence and the friendly comment. The picture was taken with a Nikon D600 on the 1000 m high Hohenpeissenberg, near my hometown in Bavaria, Germany. When I arrived at the peak there was still thick fog. Although it was very cold and windy, I waited patiently for sun gaps. Just before I was completely frozen, the sky opened and revealed to me this wonderful scenery! I used Lightroom and Photoshop for post processing.

  • The vertical format adds to the graphic appeal of this photograph, a harmonious mix of horizontal and vertical lines. The slow shutter enhances the drizzling downward journey of the threads of water from one mossy ledge to another and creates that important mist. You have captured the damp atmosphere quite beautifully, this is an enchanting photograph and an early favourite.

  • This photo is called "aquatic organ". Photo taken at Cascades de Sales. Sixt-fer-a-horse. Haute-Savoie. France. After 2 hours of hiking I took advantage of a very dry summer, to put in value this net of thin water left by the cascade inspiring me the organ of a cathedral. Photo taken at Fuji XT-2 with 18-55 f2.8 lens and polarizing filter.

  • There is an overwhelmingly dark atmosphere in this damp place in the woods. It is a clever picture where the waterfall brings some hope to this otherwise quite spooky, fairy tale place.
