  • Thank you for the huge honor Tim. I'm Sarel van Staden, a commercial photographer from South Africa. This photo is a composite of 4 photos and was done in our studio using a LED light wand to "paint" the car. The soft reflection of the light was the result of double diffusing the light. The exposure was 4 seconds at 100 ISO, f8. Nikon D750 with 60mm f2.8 macro lens.

  • A very different type of shot to what we normally see here but I really like this. It pulls me in to it and there are many things that are happening here. Thank you for entering this and its a great capture. All the very best in 2017!

  • Great piece of work and a really nice capture. I like the stance and position of the car, the lighting is good and for me the shadow really makes this. Might have been nice to see the car a little less bright perhaps but really works, well done. All the very best in 2017!

  • Thank you for the honor, Tim. My name is Sarel van Staden, I'm a commercial photographer from South Africa. This photo is a composite of 3 images. The lighting was done by double diffusing a speed light through a beauty dish and diffuser. Nikon D750, Sigma 35mm lens on f16, 1/125, 200ISO.

  • Great use of light here and the colours work really well. One of the things I like the most about this is that the car has not been over lit and in doing so it maintains the mood correctly. I can not decide if the garage door being included adds or distracts slightly from it overall but thats choice. All the very best in 2017!

  • Hello and Thank You very much, I am happy you found this picture interesting. This shot was taken with Canon 5D + Sigma 20-40mm lens. The trickiest part was to make a burnout so that car would not move out of the focusing point. The smoke was lit by me running around the car with speedlight in hand. The whole scene was shot in Lithuania, in abandoned building which used to be a Taxi park in Soviet Union times. Happy and prosperous New Year 2017!

  • Lovely piece of detail work and lighting. Few people realise how difficult lighting these types of shots can be until they attempt it. The lighting on this is really well thought out and the light clusters of cars are some of the hardest area's to capture well so very well done. All the very best in 2017!

  • Dear Tim, thank you for the accolades and the comments on my image. I am Maryna Cotton from South Africa. This "carporn" image was shot with Nikon D800, 50mm 1.4 at f16 125s 200ISO and lit with a speedlight which was double diffused to create a soft light source. I like using this lighting technique because of the control I have over which parts are lit as well as the reflections in the paintwork and light clusters.

  • It is in its nature a simple shot but I wanted to include it because for me the warmth and tones work really well. The colour is exceptional and my only thought would be to perhaps have the car less centred but again thats choice. Nice piece of work and great exposure and tonal control All the very best in 2017!

  • I have a thing about side profiles of cars and I do often think that they offer a very simplistic view of a car but also a pleasing one in a graphical type of way. This is really well done and fall off to shadow lower down works well. All the very best in 2017!

  • A very different type of shot to what we normally see entered but clearly one that I think should be included in the results for this round. Its a very good documentary style editorial shot with good positioning and space as well as have all the elements there to have some interest. All the very best in 2017!

  • Thanks! Photography is all about timing, and this moment just unfolded right in front of me. I couldn't stage a better version if I tried!
