  • Congratulations This is my chosen winner for this round. A quite beautiful piece of lit detail work that really stood out for me. The camera position, focal length and most of all, control of light, are superb. I love the crispness of this and shooting and lighting the front glass headlight area is probably one of the hardest area's to light so a fantastic achievement to create such a beautiful piece of work. Well done !

  • Thank you for the huge honour, Tim. I am Sarel van Staden, and I have been innovating new and better lighting techniques for some time now, to eliminate the bright reflections in headlights. I used instant light, which I double diffused to create soft light and the matt finish. NIKON D3, 60mm f2,8 Macro.

  • My second place this round goes to another piece of lit detail auto work. Something that we are have seen a lot more of in this round. Lighting detail on cars is never easy because of all the reflective curves and the mixture of glass and metal but it is very satisfying indeed when it is accomplished and this shot is testament to that. I love the light fall off and the whole capture has a great feel to it. Well done!

  • Thank you, Tim. I am Sarel van Staden. I have been practicing the painting with light technique for a while now, using a custom made light wand. This a great way of achieving the beautiful fall off and is equally successful on glass and metal. NIKON D750, 50mm f1,4.

  • 3rd place this round goes to a very deserving rear static that really stood out of me. The positioning of the car is really good and the height of the capture in relation to the car works perfectly for this particular model giving it both space and stance. I think that the sky maybe a later addition but regardless it creates the right look and feel for this and it is a very accomplished piece of work. Well Done!

  • This bike shot is one that grabbed my attention. The understated lighting and the pure simplicity of the shot make it a great piece of work. From a tonal point of view I can imagine that the lighting was far from simple and it has been performed really well.

  • More lighting detail again in this round but I had to include this in the final shortlist for its accomplished capture and the exceptional lighting that has gone into this shot. I feel that perhaps if the lens had been less 'wide' and the position shifted then it could possibly have had more impact but the lighting is exceptional and the position as always in just personal taste and creativity in itself. Well done

  • Thank you for the merit, Tim. I am Sarel van Staden. This image was shot on location in a dealership. After many hours of practice I discovered a cool way of creating the soft light effect needed to light reflective bodywork. D750 50mm f1,4

  • Its simple and it is a good example of lighting a car in a environment during failing light at night. I like the contrast in colour balance between the light used for the car and the warmer internal lighting of the building. The position is good and it was great to see that the photographer choose to keep that detail and texture in above the car itself.

  • Its a quirky documentive style of capture but it works well and what i like is the use of black and white for this subject matter and most importantly that the photographer has not been afraid to give the subject plenty of space. A very pleasing shot well done.

  • Thank you for the mark! This was taken on a recent cross-country road trip somewhere in Utah. The speed limit was 80mph and we came up on the couple in this car very quickly, though they were holding a steady 60mph. I kept a safe distance, had my wife hold the wheel and snapped this shot through the windshield with a Canon 5D mk3 and 24-70 f4L.

  • A fantastic rear shot of this iconic car. The lighting is really great and the camera shoot position in relation to the car has been chosen well to give the whole scene some added drama. Through personal taste I would have liked to have seen little more light into the rear light clusters on the right and left just to pick up some of their colour and texture coming out of the darkness, but again this is personal taste. A great piece of lighting.

  • I love this and just had to include it in this rounds shortlist pick. The lighting on the vehicle is really well done and also the balance of lighting on the man too. I think its great that the photographer has taken what could have just been a lit car static and give it some death of meaning and a story by making the inclusion of the driver at the side. Good work
