- I am truly flattered and surprised to have won First Prize given the quality of the other photographers' submissions in this contest. It means more to me because as a voting contest, my "peers" decided the outcome. Thank you! My name is Rob Darby and I live in San Francisco. Clearly, this photo was not taken in California, but rather near Kiruna, Sweden on a photography tour I took this February above the Arctic Circle in Norway/Sweden. This night was spectacular with the aurora racing across the sky, sometime pausing, forming curtains of color, and then changing again. I took this shot with a Nikon D4S, Nikkor 24 mm/1.4 lens, f/1.4, ISO 2000, 6 second exposure. I did only minor post-processing: slight color saturation, sharpening, and noise reduction in Photoshop. - Thank you for your votes! This was taken in Byron, CA at sunrise. Nikon D810 and a Nikkor 16-35mm lens @ 16mm. This is a 5 image HDR @ 1EV apart. Post in Photomatix Pro and Photoshop.

- Thanks for the recognition of this image. It is great to have other photographers recognize your work! My name is Rob Darby and I live in San Francisco, California. I am a photo enthusiast and avid storm chaser. I mostly do landscape and storm photography. This image was captured in Western Kansas in May and is one of my favorite imaged of storm structure that I have captured. This was a really intense storm and the photo was taken near sunset which given the interesting color in the rain bands on the right. This was shot with a Nikon D800E, 24-120 f/4 Nikkor lens, 24mm, f/8, ISO 200, 1/80s. This was a difficult image to process because the light was so dynamic, so I tried a number of things before settling on a pretty basic scheme: increased Clarity/Vibrance, sharpening, reduced highlights and increased blacks.
