  • Excellent capture and final image. Well deserved 1st place ! I love the space the shooter has afforded the car and scene and also the use of the colours in this final image. The lighting is really spot on and whole scene works really well together. Congrats.

  • Thrilled to have won! This is a relatively simple shot taken on a nice clear, moonlit night. The car was lit using a torch and diffuser, several images stacked in photoshop to make the final image. Normally I would never use a wide angle lens for an automotive shot but thought I would give it a try due to the sky looking so great and it seems to have worked well. Nikon D300 and Sigma 10-20mm

  • My name is Evano Gucciardo and I am an Automotive Photographer based in Rochester, New York. Thank you for the MOE! I am shooting with the Nikon d800. For this specific shot I brought along a single Alien bee 1600 for lighting and composited numerous shots together. Believe it or not we actually got the car in this abandoned warehouse which made for a fantastic post-apocalyptic feel.

  • Thank you for the kind commentary, congratulations to the winner. My name is Matthias Pfau. I took this photo in down town Chicago on Randolph and State, on a evening walk home. The time of day is good for high contrast scenes. The photo was taken with a Leica M 240 and post processing included some increase in contrast and sharpness to enhance the road surface texture and cropping to makes the shadow the leading element.

  • Lovely detail piece of work, well lit and a good composition. Detail coming out of the darkness is one of my own favourite ways to shoot and often people don't fully realise how difficult lit detail is too shoot well so this is an impressive shot and well placed.

  • Many thanks to Tim for the award. My name is Sarel and I'm a commercial photographer based in South Africa. I used a Nikon D700 with 50mm f1.4. For lighting I used a homemade light wand to create a "soft box" 100mm from the car's body, this allows my to light up only small areas of the car with no spill light.

  • Thanks to the jury and Tim, for the Mark of Excellence. This shot of an Audi R8 V10 Spyder was taken with my Canon EOS 6D, the 35mm 1.4L It took about 7 or 8 shots with flashlights to create the lightning and the mood of this scene. Thx to our local tire dealer for this great location! :)

  • A very unusual shot for this competition and an attention grabber ! I love the colours in this and the feel of the image cast against the freezing front end of the train. I would have loved to have seen this straight on without the platform but can imagine that could have been dangerous to try and achieve so many congrats on a unique capture

  • Thank you for the kind commentary, congratulations to the winner. My name is Matthias Pfau. This photo was taken with a Canon 5d Mark II, the camera that got me back into photography. The location was Chicago's Union Station during one of the coldest winters on record. Post processing consists of darkening the background and local curve adjustments to enhance the color contrasts. As the juror indicated stepping in front of the train would have been a risk, not so much because of the train but local authorities who have a certain reputation.

  • Its brave and its simple and in my view it works really well, the shadow adds something into this shot and the fact that its been kept in mono tones also to aid with the structure and textures, well done, great capture

  • Great shot of a true classic, the lighting is quite nice on this and perhaps it would not have had the same impact without the engine being in play so that was a good choice I feel, good framing and overall a nice piece of work

  • This shot was taken as part of a commercial car shoot for an american car restoration company based in the UK. The 1970's Dodge Challenger is an iconic car known for it's muscle and aggressive looks. When looking around the car, the rear end expressed this attitude perfectly so rather than take it on the road, I turned off all the lights in the garage and setup my studio lights. To get the brake lights and exhaust fumes illuminated in shot, I sat in the car with my foot on the brake pedal whilst dabbing the throttle and taking shots with my remote shutter release that fired my tripod mounted camera. Taken with Nikon D810 with Nikon NIKKOR 70-200 f/2.8 VRII lens at 100mm, 1/60 sec, f2.8, ISO64 with 2x Lastolite Lumen8 400W studio strobes from each side and 1x Nikon SB-700 Speedlight underneath.

  • Love this shot, simple and has an appeal of its very own not only for the car itself and the textures and age in that but also for the scene where its been shot. My only thought would be that it would have been great to see this shot with less distortion to the car itself, maybe perhaps next time the chance it there it would be good to focus closer or pull back from the subject car and use a less wide angle lens, great shot though !

  • thank you for the mark of excellence! The picture was taken on the Brooklyn side of the Manhattan Bridge in New York. Camera Canon 1DX Lens Canon 16-35 L lense 2.8 Focal Length 18mm Aperture F11 This belongs to a series of Photos of this car, indeed the car itself could have been taken with a 24mm or 50mm to keep it from distortion, however I found that the subject was more interesting in the context of the environment The broken fence, the wet background and of course the bridge transport us to the seventies. In addition another car was parked tightly behind this one so other angles where not as isolating. It's really a street scene, more than a car portrait and it is not staged so there was little control over the environment, forcing the angular view. Congratulations to the winner and all the other contestants. I am extremely happy to have been mentioned among such great work.
