  • Classic sports image, good detail, timing and capturing the heat of the action. You don't always need a long lens for sports, but in a case like this, you would be lost without one, good timing, great shot.

  • Strong photojournalistic image. I wouldn't be surprised if this didn't make the front page of newspapers already?, If the topic is sports in the USA, this is a sure fire winner, the photographer had good access (access is very important in sports or news events as we all know, being in the right place at the right time is key) and it has good timing, relevant background and clear decisive subject, works very well, good stuff.

  • Nice atmospheric image, the ball adds the sport element of course, maybe would have preferred to see them in opposite positions, i.e. the child facing the camera to see his concentration, etc, but nevertheless good lighting and atmosphere.

  • Thank you for the award of "Mark of Excellence". This is the third time I receive this award. Also I am so glad to have two awards at the same time in this category and the other one is the bicycle showing the sense of speed. This photo was taken in Hong Kong at Summer time. I used a Leica S2 with 70mm standard lens.

  • Good image depicting paralympic style sports. Shows speed, motion, action...maybe in colour could work well also...but good technical image for sure.

  • Good timing, its kind of a standard soccer image but theres a reason this kind of image just works....timing, action, its there.

  • Interesting viewpoint, good use of technical skill, i.e. slow shutter speed to enhance the movement and give a real sense of speed. The photographer here is really trying to show something different and has succeeded in doing so, good work.

  • Thank you for the award of "Mark of Excellence". This is the third time I receive this award. Also I am so glad to have two awards at the same time in this category and the other one is the boy who is playing the ball. Taking this photo at night is really challenging. I need lots of planning and practice. It was chosen from around 50 shots. I used a Nikon D3 with 50mm standards lens.

  • Good image depicting this sport, good use of high angle viewpoint, nice composition, just works for me, maybe even a slower shutter speed from this viewpoint might give a cool effect also.

  • Thanks a lot for this mark of excellence! The picture was taken in March 2009 on a motocross race track in Pößneck/Thuringia (Germany). I shot it with a Canon Eos 40D and used a telephoto lens 2.8/200. The photo shows the first corner: whoever leads here stands a good chance of riding on without a crash. It's one of my favorite pictures - I love the colors, the dust, the angle and perspective, the action.

  • Nice image, works well, but we have seen many images recently from this sport and mostly in black and white also, so unfortunately its losing its impact for me personally, however I'm sure for people who haven't seen many of these images, they will like it. Good photo.

  • Thanks for the 10th "Mark Of Excellence" [--] without a win. Some critique at my own expense: My last MoE (Sports Competition No.1) showed a dragging motion of an Indian Kambla and like today the Juror wrote "..we have seen many images recently from this sport..". I am afraid Mr. Tyson meant the Indonesian Pacu Jawi or the Madurese Karapang Sapi cause I've never seen a Kambla-Image in an international Sports Competition and i follow the majority.. . To my surprise, finally, the winner was a picture of a "never-seen-before" Volleyball Match. Furthermore, jellyfish-diving in Palau is tourism not a sport. And the 3rd time in a row i ask myself: Why I cannot find the current "Most Popular Photo" among partially prosaic pictures? For an ultimately aesthetic pic like that i stuck in the mud knee-deep and got hit twice by the bulls. Lamented enough..i am out. Un'grudgingly, Wolf (Berlin, Germany)

  • Nice image, I'm sure this surfer has a copy framed at home by now, and if not, he should! Nice composition, I'm sure was not an easy shot to nail, would love to see more images like this at dusk or dawn with flash, would look great also.

  • Thank you for the recognition. My name is Melinda Smith. This was shot on the coast of NC with a Canon 5D and a 100-400 L lens. A hurricane was off shore, providing good waves for the surfers. Lots of action that day.

  • Strong technical image, perfect timing, background is too cluttered for me personally, but nevertheless still a very strong sports image, maybe don't crop too tight...i would love this against a blue sky with more negative space...

  • Nice composition, use of scale for dramatic effect, can't really fault this image, works well for this event. Maybe a more panoramic crop taking out the sky above the sunstar might make it even more dramatic?

  • Thank you so much for the remarks. This photo was taken in the early morning on a summit attempt of Mt. Shasta. I love the way the sun illuminates the atmosphere below. It gives a sense of of the struggle these mountaineers are going through. My name is Seth Dunn, I am an passionate photographer and architectural designer. While this photo was taken with my iPhone due to weight limitations, I shoot film on a 1979 Canon F-1 and digital with my Nikon D90. Please check out my website!

  • Nice image of this sport, wish he was more separated from the building, but still works for me, im glad i can't see the ground, helps add to the effect of height, nice strong image with good timing and froze the action.

  • Thank you very much for your mark. I am very pleased. My name is tom, I am a photographer from munich/germany. This was the first time I've fotographed a sports contest. I had also shot another picture which was more separated, but the biker had less dynamic for me. It was a spontaneous idea to go to the X-games 2013 this year in munich. I shot there with my new Canon 70-300l lens and a 50d body. ISO 640, 150mm, f7.1. Best regards

  • Great timing, shows the sense of speed, skill and determination required to achieve that move...can't fault anything about this image, maybe the tower behind is a slight distraction, otherwise, like it a lot.

  • Thank you very much for the Mark Of Excellence. The winner in this competition was a worthy winner and my favorite as well. This photo is taken in Southern Norway on a place called Saltstein. (A stoney beach in Larvik). It is taken with my trusty 70-200 f2.8 and a Canon 5d Mark III camera.

  • "Into the Abyss...."....love this idea, but the 2 things that distract me are the lighting is bland, at dusk or dawn with moody light this could work well...and the watermark....its very white on white so doesnt really show anyway, kind of pointless and I really advise people not to watermark images for competitions, I've never ever seen a watermarked image win a comp....that alone will knock it down a few spots, great idea though for the actual subject matter.

  • Thank you so much for your remarks I highly appreciate as they help me to improve. The image has been taken in Australia, Gold Coast, and is one of the first surf moments I ever watched so closely. Fantastic! My camera is a Canon 60D. No postprocessing. My name is Lisa.
