  • When admiring the magnificence of the Golden Gate Bridge one can’t help but think about the days when it wasn’t there, and how immigration started to build the city and then finally when the bridge was built. This image captures the idea of coming and going to San Francisco, not as a tourist but as someone looking for a place to spread their roots. The emotional quality holds this image together and the apparent ease with which it was taken allows us to focus on something beyond the picture. The viewer is transported to place which he is not sure when or where it is, therefore free to enjoy the image.

  • Thank you very much for choosing my photograph as the winner. My name is Meliha Eras. I live in Houston and took this photograph when I was visiting San Francisco in May. I took this photo because I was interested in the lady. I could feel her mood as she was looking at Golden Gate Bridge even if I did not see her face. This image was taken with Nikon D 700.. Nikkor 24 mm 2.8. Processed in LIghtroom 4.

  • It's been said that the shadow is your friend, and we felt that the shadow regions in this well executed photo really help make the image work by giving it a sense of space and depth. The black area around the perimeter helps bring the viewer inside the room with a feeling of actually being there looking out. The juxtaposition of round and straight lines also adds to the composition.

  • The bright colorful aspect of this photo caught our attention first and the painterly quality achieved is impressive, but the subject matter takes the stage. Something quite unique to San Francisco has been elegantly recorded and expressed in this image: the seemingly similar architectural styles set apart by color and detail, and ultimately their individual owner's personality. These are attributes that can be applied to not only its houses but it's practices and it's people.

  • The fog is the unknown spectacle of San Francisco for many, locals and visitors alike. It can create a world of dreams that can be opened to diverse explanations. We were attracted to the image because it compliments the historical footprint of the City by the Bay as a port city. The photo produces an endless feeling of solitude that many come to San Francisco for.

  • Going through the selections, we kept an eye out for uniquely narrated images. The iconic solitary island of Alcatraz framed through the cluttered, but well placed, electrical wires depicts San Francisco grittier components. The fog blanketing “The Rock” is a sheer signature of the city normally portrayed within a closer proximity. This places the observer into a time warp in which they are directly looking at a prison that once housed the most notorious of criminals.

  • Although this close up of one of San Francisco’s contemporary museums may not be as well known as the Golden Gate Bridge it certainly holds a special place for those of us who live here. When the jury panel came to this image we all had a moment of inspiration, the simplicity and beauty of the architecture, emphasized by the composition, earned this image a place in the top ten.

  • This photos composition is the winning factor here. The bend of the fence mimics the bridge in a poignant way, relating two metal structures so different in their purpose and strength yet integral to city life here in San Francisco. In addition, the attention to detail is apparent and the contrasts are beautifully balanced.

  • We really enjoyed the creative approach the photographer took to showcase the iconic bridge of San Francisco in the lens of the water drops, leaving the real lines in abstract forms of the background. The warm colors tones used also enhance the image.
