  • Today, even the most basic digital cameras come with a range of creative features and image editing software adds even more. Taking the time to experiment with these features can enable you to create images with a difference. Here, multiple exposures of Swifts flying between buildings have created wonderful 'trails'. Despite reviewing over 1 million bird images, I've never seen one quite like this before, so ten out of ten for novelty!

  • I am very grateful for this prize. My name is Laurent Godel and I live in Barcelona, Spain. This image was taken by a Canon G12 compact camera in hi-definition video mode. The footage was then processed so all the frames would merge together in a single file, applying transparency criteria. More images are available on my blog (link below).

  • Photos of birds feeding their young are generally popular, but can be a challenge when the baby birds are concealed in cover. This charming, Disneyesque scene of Red-whiskered Bulbul chicks eagerly awaiting a meal couldn't be better posed and arranged. Which one would you feed?

  • This was taken in our farm house. This was taken in Cannon 40D camera and 300mm 2.8 lens. Only contrast increased while doing post processing, other than this this is untouched photo from the nature. I was fortunate to get this snap on the last day of the bird feeding to the babies. After that few minutes drama, i was not able to find anywhere nearby. My name is Arun kumar N.K. from Bangalore, Karnataka - India I am a hobby photographer and my email id is [email protected]

  • A very clever take on a common scene. How many people would have thought to shoot the mother duck's reflection, rather than the bird itself?

  • Thank you so much for the Mark of Excellence. It is an honor to to receive it. My name is Sylvia Evans and I live north of Nashville in Tennessee. While at the lake one weekend, I noticed this baby duck and his mom at the edge of the lake and decided the baby duck and the reflection made an interesting photo. Taken with a Canon 40D and a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8.

  • Most hummingbird shots show them perched or drinking from flowers/feeders. This shot of one drinking from a fountain is a real break from the norm and very well executed.

  • Gwen Lacombe / Canon 5D / Canon 24-105mm lens / I shot this while on a visit to Hearst Castle in San Simeon, CA. I had never observed a hummingbird drinking from a fountain in this manner. The hummingbird was so quick, I was only able to get a couple of shots before it flew away.

  • Diane Higdem Twin Lakes, (North) Idaho Canon50D, 300 f/5.6L w/ 1.4 ext Aperture: 6.3 ISO: 640 Exp: 1/400 My boyfriend & I photograph almost entirely from our kayaks, all year long. These Grebes we nicknamed Ricky & Lucy because of the way they "talk" to each other. Ricky & Lucy had become very tolerant of us coming up close to their nest & following them around, waiting for mama or papa to return with a meal. What is absolutely endearing about this picture, & the series it belongs to; mama & papa are so very gentle and eager to help the babies. Whichever parent brought the fish in would gently position the fish head first into the baby\\\\\\\'s mouth, while the parent on whose back the babies are riding, would gently assist by guiding the fish. Sometimes, a fish was a bit too big for the wee one, so mama ate it and went off looking for another. These three lobe-toed birds are my favorites to watch and photo!

  • Many bird photographers attempt to provide a 'sense of place' by including something of the surroundings of their avian subjects. This shot takes this to the extreme, with a globally recognizable backdrop providing context.

  • Birds look their best when depicted in their natural habitats. The swamp setting of this Heron image turns a bird portrait into an environmental study.

  • This type of panning shot is a lot more difficult than it looks. Keeping the head of the Canada Goose sharp during the long exposure takes a lot of practice.

  • My name is Stefan Betz and I am from southern Germany. I took this shot in a natural reserve, a few kilometres away from my hometown. It was a rainy morning, with soft light and not chance to get fast exposure times. So I decided to catch all those birds around me in flight, with long exposures between 1/15secs and 1/60secs.... Equipment used: Canon EOS 7D + EF 600mm f4 @ 1/25sec f11 ISO800 , videohead & tripod
