  • Congratulations! This beautiful black and white seascape wins this round of the landscape competition. It is a lovely moody shot of the beautiful view to the Cuillins on the isle of Skye. The Scottish weather has been captured perfectly giving this scene its charm. The composition is lovely with strong lines and balance, the long exposure giving softness to the sea and sky, adding to the sharp hardness of the rocks. This is a great effort, well done, a deserved win.

  • Nina Papiorek, 33 years, professional photographer from Oberhausen (Germany). This photo was taken at Elgol beach on the "Isle of Skye" in Scotland on a very stormy and rainy day with dark clouds. It's a long-time exposure with ND-filter.

  • Great contrast, colour saturation and a bold composition make this photo. The sunlight and shade on the rock formations have been siezed beautifully, the sky is full of drama, the left/right not-quite-mirror effect is strong and interesting. This could have been a winner but for its lack of sharpness and fine detail...

  • Thank you for selecting this as 2nd. I appreciate the critique as well. it snowed this day in Monument Valley and I was in a rush to get there and could see the storm from great distance, so I had to settle to pull over to side of the road with 200mm lens to grab this. Handheld Canon 60D, f6.3, 1/3200, ISO400, 200mm

  • It is the long exposure which makes this picture so beautiful. The movement in the clouds is compelling and the sea has taken on a pleasing metallic texture. The scene is beautiful and it has been beautifully portrayed. It is obviously so very cold but the image is so warm. Great shot, well done!

  • The power of this ocean has been stopped in full force, the wave about to crash. I love the soft grey tones of the cliffs through the spray and their contrast with the hard texture of the menacing wave. The composition is strong with nice graphical lines which lead the eye through all the image, the empty sky adds strength to the stormy atmosphere and brings a softness to the whole. Just beautiful.

  • Here is a picture that tells a story. The giant glacier meets the sea with all its grandeur and sheer power, man is a mere witness. Great documentary shot, well done!

  • A great honor to be chosen. Thank you! This shot was captured in August of 2012 in Glacier Bay, Alaska. I was positioned on the deck of our cruise ship when this scene appeared. I shot with a Canon EOS60d, ISO 100, F:5.6, 1/320 sec shutter speed and a 300 mm focal length. The lense I used was an EF70-300, f4-5.6L Series.

  • What a beautiful rainbow, double rainbow in fact, to add some drama to this story of adventure. It is a beautiful wild location and the tent brings so much reality to the photo. It is a thought provoking inclusion which lands us right in the image. Great stuff, I really like this one.

  • Thank you! Photographed in the Ansel Adams Wilderness at Thousand Island Lake, near Mt. Banner. it hailed and rained for two days straight leaving me depressed in my tent. Right at the end of the second day moments for sunset, the sky broke and I got this shot for my two days of trouble. Canon 60D, f5.6, 1/100s, ISO100, 15mm Fish Eye

  • The detail in this image comes slowly creeping out as you look on. It is a beautiful photograph, so sensitively composed. The misty filtering of the slanted early light makes the shadows soft. It is a lovely capture with the three trees nicely off centre. Let’s have some more like this! Well done!

  • Completely honored by this. This photograph was taken in Cades Cove in the Smokey Mountains last fall in the early morning. Taken with a Canon 40D and just a little sharpening of the image was done.

  • Well this is a really difficult one to expose correctly and you have managed that very well. The sun/shade contrast is very sharp between top and bottom and both halves of the photo have their own subject. Well done, it is a well filtered and/or processed shot. It is a little too hectic perhaps for comfortable viewing. A striking picture…

  • The force of symmetry. Great sunset colours, but what really makes this one work is the vastness of the composition, the slice of land so far away yet still so intriguing. Well done.

  • By Craig Duncklee. Taken at Chena Lake about 3 miles east of North Pole, Alaska. I used a Nikon d5100 DSLR with a Sigma 18-200mm lens. Photomatix Pro was used to compile 5 images to produce the HDR image.
