  • Bronze Medal: This photo made me look twice to actually acknowledge the bee flying away. A special capture with perfect timing. It has the touch of humor in it and you can smell spring on its way! Also composition of the branch, which goes slightly diagonal through the image adds character and flavor to it, and the top half light and the bottom half dark.

  • Thank-you VERY much! I am humbled by such recognition, especially with the number of really great photos submitted. My name is Randy Shankula and I live in St George Utah. Spring was just starting. I pulled into my driveway and when I exited my car, I could see bees around a small tree we had planted. I grabbed my 5D, 70-200 F2.8 L II lens, bumped the iso up and started taking pictures of bees and flowers. This particular photo was shot at 1/1250s, f7.1, ISO 200 Thanks again! Randy

  • Thanks! It is the under side of a pink dogwood in full bloom in early April in Holly Springs, NC. The sky was a beautiful blue that morning, and the sun illuminated the flower nicely. Buck - Canon 60D,17-55 F/2.8 EF-S, 1/80s at f/8, ISO 100 and post processed in Lightroom 4.

  • A great story being told in this photograph. An old sunflower, almost heroic in its appearance and an old wooden cottage in the background. The atmosphere in this image is really priceless. Thank you for sharing!

  • Thank you! I feel honored that my image was chosen among so many others. I shot this in Charlotte, North Carolina using a Minolta 700si with colored film and a polarized filter, and then I scanned the negative onto a computer. It was a beautiful place in the midst of autumn and this finished sunflower patch looked so harmonious with the rest of the old acreage. I did what I could to capture that, and it's fulfilling to know that it was received well!

  • Nice how the shadow in this photograph has dominance of the actual subject. The flower is almost translucent and the shadow is dark and big. Well spotted and executed!

  • My car broke down on a road trip from NYC to Kansas City earlier this year, and I was stranded on the side of the road in Columbia, MO for about three hours. Fortunately, I had my camera! As the sun started to go down, I discovered this little guy casting a large shadow and it seemed to convey the way I was feeling at the time. Thanks for the honor of this recognition! I love this photo for memory it brings of this story, and I'm so glad you loved it, too!

  • I am honored that my photo was chosen for a "Mark of Excellence" award with so many truly wonderful images submitted! This photograph was taken at one of my favorite places in the Chicago Area - Morton Arboretum. It is a special place all year round, but absolutely wondrous in the spring! Flowering trees and fields of daffodils in woodland glades are sure signs that spring has arrived! Jan Crites - Geneva, Illinois Nikon d90, Nikon 10-24mm lens, post-processing in Adobe Lightroom
