Judges Comment

Congratulations to the photographer of the winning image selected by the jury. This excellently timed capture of the dancers in the square holds the suspense of the implied movement and seems ready to burst into action. The placement of the dancers in the lower center helps support the stillness of their pose which can be juxtaposed with their implicit movement. The distorted buildings and the portion of the audience looking to the side of the frame further add to the building tension of the stillness.

Thank you very much for the first place, for the prize and the comment! It’s an honor. My name is Denis Malciu and I live in Bucharest, Romania. The picture was taken in Bucharest, on a street in the old part of the city. I was there with a few friends who share my passion for street photography when we bumped into some sort of an event that involved a tango demonstration. I seized the moment and took several shots that seem representative to me (in terms of atmosphere) of Bucharest, which was referred to as Little Paris during the interwar years. I used my Sony A7 camera with a Sony Sonnar T* 55mm F1.8 ZA lens. I then edited the raw file in Adobe Camera Raw, where I also applied a VSCO filter, for a film-like texture.
