Most bird photographers are obsessed with detail and spend huge amounts of time and money to capture birds with as much resolution as possible. This type of photography inevitably isolates the birds from their environment and loses all natural context. Thankfully, more photographers are discovering 'birdscapes' as an alternative and this monochrome panorama featuring a skua in a foreboding coastal wilderness shows the power of this technique. Best of all, this approach is all about 'seeing', not equipment, so anyone can give it a go.

Specialized in landscape photography, I'm very happy to win the bird competition with an untypical bird photo. I liked the foggy situation at the beach near Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon on Iceland with the Skua in the foreground. Photo was taken with a Nikon D800E and a Nikkor 70-200/4.0 Raw processing and crop in Lightroom. Final b&w processing with Silver Efex Pro. Thank you for the first prize :-) Stefan Puetz
