Leica Oskar Barnack Public Award 2014 - I SHOT IT members vote

November 15th, 2013

The Oskar Barnack Award 2014

Every year, Leica Camera AG runs a highly prestigious photography competition in honour of its founder – the Oskar Barnack Award.

In 2014 the Oskar Barnack Award will be celebrating 100 years since the Leica company’s founding. Leica Camera AG have decided to make this centenary competition in 2014 special in several ways and have invited I SHOT IT members to join in the celebrations.

For the first time in the award’s history, there will be a Leica Oskar Barnack Public Award. The winner of this award will be determined from a shortlist of candidates selected by the jury in an online vote organised in collaboration with I SHOT IT. Yes, that’s right, our I SHOT IT members and participants get to choose the very first winner of the Leica Oskar Barnack Public Award.

Not only will the winner receive a cash prize of 2,500 euros but I SHOT IT members who participated in the voting will be entered into a draw for compact cameras as non-cash prizes.

We are sure you will join us in recognising what an enormous honour it is for us to be asked to participate in choosing the winner of an important international photographic competition in this way – with the addition of a chance to win a camera as a reward for taking part in the voting panel.

I SHOT IT really is the Best Photo Competition.

Judges Critiquing Service

October 31st, 2013

Ever since we started our first I Shot It competition, along with the prizes we offer, one of the things that people tell us they strive for is to have a critique of their photo by one of our highly-experienced I Shot It judges. We think the judge's critique is a great way for people to understand the complexities of the judging process and creates a learning resource for other photographers to refer to.

We have invested a great deal of time and effort in trying to find a way to make this work within the I Shot It competition structure and we think we have a system ready for a live test. Judge Duncan MacArthur has agreed to help us run the test on his Landscape and Wildlife Competitions and the test will be both optional and FREE to try.

How will it work?

When a photo is entered into the competition, an additional button will allow you to submit the photo to be considered by Duncan for critique. Duncan will choose groups of photos to be able to illustrate ways to improve framing or depth of field for example but we cannot guarantee he will be able to critique every photo submitted. This process will take place after the competition is over and the photos will continue to remain anonymous.

This will not be a forum arrangement and we regret that neither I Shot It nor Duncan MacArthur will be able to enter into discussions about the critiques.

The first round of critiques can be viewed here: Landscape Photo Competition 2013 No 5 : Judges Critiques
